This blog should be called "The Adventures of a Fabric Junkie!". I am passionate about fabric, threads, colours and textures. I can record my crazy quilting, sane quilting, embroidery and everything else that I consider important in my life.

Photo shows my block for the Hurricane Katrina fund-raising quilt "All That Jazz".

Beaded Bridal dress for Barbie size doll.

This is one of my favourite Bridal outfits I have made for a Barbie doll. The whole bodice was beaded, back and front, the headpiece was beaded and sequined, the fabric was ivory silk with a huge frilled skirt. This was my first attempt at making custom jewellery and long gloves.

Looking at your Barbie wedding dress took me back nearly 40 years when I owned one of the original red swimsuited Barbie dolls... My mother who was a wonderful dressmaker - decided to make my Barbie and my best friend's Barbie evening dresses... She found a suitable pattern some white/silver lame and off she went...

The bodice of the frocks were fully lined and darted... Barbie was still the well endowed girl she is today... The skirt sections were narrow and 'skimmed' the hips... After much fiddling and frustrated sighs the dresses were finished - complete with sheer stoles and 'diamond' sparkles... She was heard to comment later that she would have preferred to make two full size gowns as she was sure they wouldn't have taken as long... Mum said it was the machine sewing that was the most difficult part on something that was so small...

Mum was a milliner by trade and she also made bridal headwear wear ('swan lake' pearl tiaras in those days!!!!)So each Barbie also had a headpiece of more 'sparkles' on a band to complete 'the look'...

My friend and I thought these outfits were wonderful and that our Barbies would be 'belle(s) of the Ball' - just because they were both 'Ken-less' was a small price to pay...

It's true Sharlee. The fiddly bits are the challenging bits which is what I love to do. I made another beaded Barbie outfit consisting of narrow dress, overskirt and jacket in dark red with a beaded pattern down the skirt and on the jacket - I'll post that photo too.
